As we come to our penultimate Poe episode, Dave laments the use of a better pun earlier, and Mike - rightly - mocks him for it.


Most people who are familiar with Poe have at least heard of "The Cask of Amontillado," the subject matter of today's episode, and one of Poe's most famous and oft-anthologized works. We'll discuss the continued motifs of madness and power dynamics, and Poe's employment of his Unity of Effect will be on full display.


Amontillado is a real beverage, lest you think Poe invented it, and he also borrowed the words for the family crest that you'll be hearing. An national motto - and it's maybe no surprise which nation uses it - of debated origin, we gotta at least say that the Scots find a way to have fun - and be pretty stabby with many of their symbols... right down to their choice of national animal.


Remember, if you ever mock a nobleman whose family has fallen on hard times, it may be a good idea to let someone know where you're going before you follow him down to his family vault for a sip of a rare wine...
